Who this is for
Optic is used by a parent or legal guardian to supervise their own child's Windows PC. By creating an account you confirm you are that parent or guardian, and that you will tell your child Optic is installed. Optic also tells them itself, the first time it runs after setup.
What is recorded on the child's PC
- Apps: which program is in front, its window title, and for how long.
- Websites: the sites and page titles visited in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox, and for how long.
- Programs started: including terminals and their command lines.
- Downloads and installs: file names and where they came from. A download a parent blocks is moved to a locked folder, not deleted.
- On-screen text: analyzed on the PC and never uploaded as a whole. Only a short snippet (at most 200 characters) around a word the parent chose to be alerted to, or around adult content, is sent. Password fields are never read.
- Requests: when a child asks for more time or to unblock something, their reason and the decision.
What Optic never records
- Screenshots, keystrokes, the camera or the microphone.
- The contents of files, messages or documents.
- Anything from the parent's own devices.
Where it goes and who can see it
Recorded activity is sent to Optic's servers over an encrypted connection and stored encrypted at rest. Only the parent account that set the PC up can see it. Parents can switch individual kinds of monitoring off; switched-off activity is not uploaded.
When a parent turns on automatic approval, a child's request (the reason they typed and what they asked for) is checked by an AI model that runs for Optic. It can only approve within the limits the parent set; it never denies, and every decision is shown to the parent.
How long it is kept
Detailed activity is kept for the number of days the parent chooses (7 to 90), then deleted. Daily totals, used for weekly trends and the child's morning summary, are kept until the account is deleted. On the PC itself, detailed activity is kept for 30 days.
Your choices
- Change what is monitored, or stop monitoring, from the dashboard at any time.
- Uninstalling Optic requires the parent PIN and a Windows administrator.
- To export or delete everything, email privacy@optic.fyi from the account's address.
